This is my favourite children's book I've read this year。 I appreciate that Lawrence tackles some dark topics without sugarcoating them。 Lawrence respects the young reader's intelligence。 I liked the characters and their growth。 This is my favourite children's book I've read this year。 I appreciate that Lawrence tackles some dark topics without sugarcoating them。 Lawrence respects the young reader's intelligence。 I liked the characters and their growth。 。。。more

I borrowed this from the library hoping for something like a middle-grade version of Lindsey Davis's Falco mysteries, but I was sorely disappointed。 The mystery and historical details were good, but I was completely turned off by the amount of Christian propaganda within the story。 I borrowed this from the library hoping for something like a middle-grade version of Lindsey Davis's Falco mysteries, but I was sorely disappointed。 The mystery and historical details were good, but I was completely turned off by the amount of Christian propaganda within the story。 。。。more

I read this for my love of Ancient Rome and ended up really enjoying it。 I will definitely be reading the next books in the series。 I love that it haves an unlikely friendship and a mystery but you also hear snippets about what life was like when living in Rome thousands of years ago。

I read this with hopes that it would be something like John Maddox Robert's SPQR Series。 In some ways it's better, and in some ways it not。 Obviously, this is meant for kids, although I think some of this would be a little much for even some middle schoolers。 So, it's not quite so involved, even though there was quite a lot happening。 But, what I did enjoy was the light shined on Jews and (view spoiler)[Christians (hide spoiler)] during this time。 This was very quick to read, although at times I I read this with hopes that it would be something like John Maddox Robert's SPQR Series。 In some ways it's better, and in some ways it not。 Obviously, this is meant for kids, although I think some of this would be a little much for even some middle schoolers。 So, it's not quite so involved, even though there was quite a lot happening。 But, what I did enjoy was the light shined on Jews and (view spoiler)[Christians (hide spoiler)] during this time。 This was very quick to read, although at times I found myself not getting into, but I did read the last 80 pages in one go, so maybe it was just me。 I won't rush to read the next few, but I also wouldn't mind seeing where the series goes from here, in this story of violence, friends, and mystery。 。。。more

I didn’t hate it。 However, I have no idea how the author looked at her idea on paper and decided:‘that’s got to be a book!’ And the very most it could be a short story but not a 190 page book。 Most kids could come up with better plots/stories。What can I say, it is appropriate for children。

The beginning of a series of enthralling stories, this novel follows Flavia as she becomes acquainted with Jonathan, her new next door neighbor, Nubia, a slave girl who Flavia buys and treats as an equal, and Lupus, the beggar boy who has no tongue。 When someone starts beheading the dogs of their neighborhood, the four young detectives set out to figure out who it is and stop the killer。 This series is timeless。 The characters are lovable and amusing, and the storyline flows great。 I read this s The beginning of a series of enthralling stories, this novel follows Flavia as she becomes acquainted with Jonathan, her new next door neighbor, Nubia, a slave girl who Flavia buys and treats as an equal, and Lupus, the beggar boy who has no tongue。 When someone starts beheading the dogs of their neighborhood, the four young detectives set out to figure out who it is and stop the killer。 This series is timeless。 The characters are lovable and amusing, and the storyline flows great。 I read this series years ago, and still hold it close to my heart! 。。。more

High adventure in this first novel of the Roman Mysteries。 There are several real topics that can be derived and discussed from this book。 Seems like it could be a school book - except it is actually an interesting story。This book has a childlike take on Judaism, Christianity, roman pantheism, slavery, and abuse。

I stopped about midway。 I think it's an interesting series for kids and it made Ancient Rome very real, I just stopped reading it at some point。 Will be happy to read it to my kids when they're old enough。 I stopped about midway。 I think it's an interesting series for kids and it made Ancient Rome very real, I just stopped reading it at some point。 Will be happy to read it to my kids when they're old enough。 。。。more

Does anybody know any websites where you can read this story for free? I used to read this a lot and I want to read it again。 Thanks!

I remember reading this for the first time when I was younger and becoming absolutely obsessed with the idea of somebody like Flavia and her friends and going around solving all these mysteries。 I also remember it being the beginning of my Roman history obsession so oops。 But also the story is quite good for what it essentially is。 A group of children solve mysteries。 Like a Roman mystery gang。 It’s great fun and I’m actually really looking forward to reading the rest of the series as part of my I remember reading this for the first time when I was younger and becoming absolutely obsessed with the idea of somebody like Flavia and her friends and going around solving all these mysteries。 I also remember it being the beginning of my Roman history obsession so oops。 But also the story is quite good for what it essentially is。 A group of children solve mysteries。 Like a Roman mystery gang。 It’s great fun and I’m actually really looking forward to reading the rest of the series as part of my nostalgia book tour! You know it's a hit when the kids ask for book 2。 A kids mystery set in the Ancient Roman Era, it follows four children with very different backgrounds。 The daughter of a ship captain, a slave girl, a Christan boy, and a mute beggar boy。 When a watch dog is murdered and beheaded, the kids try to find out who did it。 Obviously, this is not for a sensitive child。 More than one dog dies in this novel and we also learn quite clearly what happens when you get bitten by a rapid dog。 But there is a lot You know it's a hit when the kids ask for book 2。 A kids mystery set in the Ancient Roman Era, it follows four children with very different backgrounds。 The daughter of a ship captain, a slave girl, a Christan boy, and a mute beggar boy。 When a watch dog is murdered and beheaded, the kids try to find out who did it。 Obviously, this is not for a sensitive child。 More than one dog dies in this novel and we also learn quite clearly what happens when you get bitten by a rapid dog。 But there is a lot of the everyday life in the city and a great way to read about what life was like back then, set with a good mystery to solve。 。。。more

I’m now 18, and I read this book about 8 years ago now- so don’t remember the plot intricacies。 However, I remembered the series recently and thought I should write a quick review of what I remember。 I absolutely loved it at the time, and I do think it started my love for Rome, which means I’m off to university to study Classics in October。 Wonderful series

Great book! I enjoyed reading it and had lots of fun。 Would recommend to anyone who likes mystery books。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I think this book was very well thought out and clearly had a lot of understanding of how life was like in roman times, with references to scrolls(books) etc。 It begins with flavia, a Roman girl who longs for adventure, when her neighbours dog has been murdered her and a group of unlikely friends begin a quest to find out who is the criminal。 This book has a very good concept。 It is appropriate for year 7 and above but does have violence but not in detail。

I did enjoy this book, but although this is a middle grade book, I felt it was bit grim at times。 If you are a parent or guardian read it first before letting your child read it on their own。

The Thieves of Ostia focuses on four Roman kids solving the murders of dogs that have recently taken place in the city of Ostia, and uncovering why they even happened along the way。 The author's ability to create a setting is impressive to me, because I could pretty clearly picture where the characters were, and never really felt lost, making it a nice clear book for kids。 There were enough mystery aspects and darker occurrences to make it interesting to older children as well, and I generally l The Thieves of Ostia focuses on four Roman kids solving the murders of dogs that have recently taken place in the city of Ostia, and uncovering why they even happened along the way。 The author's ability to create a setting is impressive to me, because I could pretty clearly picture where the characters were, and never really felt lost, making it a nice clear book for kids。 There were enough mystery aspects and darker occurrences to make it interesting to older children as well, and I generally like the book, but have no strong feelings about it。 From what I read, the depiction of Rome feels pretty accurate, though I don't actually know enough to definitively say that。 。。。more

A riveting mystery set in the reign of Emperor Vespasian with a very well-developed and vibrant cast of characters。 Though fiction, the historical picture it paints of Ancient Rome is excellent and is testament to Lawrence's research and clever detail deployed from the likes of Pliny。 As it's a children's novel I found it slightly less thrilling than perhaps the Cicero trilogy by Robert Harris, but it was very engaging nonetheless and I can't wait to read the next books in the series (though giv A riveting mystery set in the reign of Emperor Vespasian with a very well-developed and vibrant cast of characters。 Though fiction, the historical picture it paints of Ancient Rome is excellent and is testament to Lawrence's research and clever detail deployed from the likes of Pliny。 As it's a children's novel I found it slightly less thrilling than perhaps the Cicero trilogy by Robert Harris, but it was very engaging nonetheless and I can't wait to read the next books in the series (though given the time period in which it's set, I'm not feeling too hopeful!) 。。。more

This book is wonderful because of all its mystery and imagination。 I think Nubia is my favorite character because of how she knows what is right, what is wrong and even though she does not speak Latin, she can warn other people of danger。

A well written mystery with some interesting historical context。 But there are a few topics mentioned but not addressed, like slavery。 For as harsh and frightening a topic it was, it was pushed aside for the rest of the plot。 Regardless, I look forward to reading another book in the series。
